Data storage can be measured using two different systems: binary (base-2) and decimal (base-10). Binary uses powers of 1024 (KiB, MiB, GiB), while decimal uses powers of 1000 (KB, MB, GB). This difference often causes confusion, especially when comparing advertised storage with actual capacity.
Operating systems like Windows use binary calculations, while storage manufacturers often use decimal. A 1TB drive shows as ~931GB in Windows because 1 TB (decimal) = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but 1 TiB (binary) = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
